ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½

Tony is a Senior Member of ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½. A graduate and postgrad at Clare, he was formerly a Professor of History and Law Tutor at the Open University, where he helped devise, direct and teach successive inter-disciplinary courses on The Enlightenment. He also taught at Keele and the University of Waterloo, Ontario.

His latest book, The Treaty of Versailles and the Carthaginian Peace: Peacemaking and Mythmaking 1918-1919 (2025), offers a fresh perspective on the Paris Peace Conference. It revisits the complexities and compromises of inter-Allied peacemaking that lay behind The Economic Consequences of the Peace, Keynes’ excoriating account of Lloyd George, Clemenceau and Wilson and his denunciation of reparations, which continues to shape the negative reputation of the Treaty of Versailles.

Tony’s previous books include Guilt at Versailles: Lloyd George and the Pre-History of Appeasement (1985), Lloyd George and the Lost Peace (2001), General Smuts (2010) and Banker, Traitor, Scapegoat, Spy? The Troublesome Case of Sir Edgar Speyer (2013). A non-practising Barrister, Tony has written biographies of two controversial judges: The Last Political Law Lord: Lord Sumner (1859-1934) (2009) and Mr Justice McCardie (1869-1933): Rebel, Reformer, and Rogue Judge (2016). He has published widely on eighteenth-century Russia, and edited The Odes of Horace for Wordsworth Classics.

As a Visiting Scholar, Visiting Fellow and Senior Member under Presidents John Morrison, David Williams, Gordon Johnson, Richard Evans, Jane Clarke and Ijeoma Uchegbu, Tony has given talks at the ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Humanities Society and lunchtime seminars. He values the friendly informality among students and academics. In his spare time he helps with literacy tuition and running a Latin club at local primary schools.
