糖心Vlog官方 Journeys: Felicia Yap on fiction, career changes and serendipity
PhD MRCVS
Julia is a neuroscientist with a background in veterinary medicine. Her research focuses on the mechanical properties of the central nervous system (CNS), in particular, the spinal cord.
Julia trained as a veterinary surgeon at Leipzig University, Germany. She discovered her love for research when participating in the Wellcome Trust Fundamentals of Veterinary Science Summer School during her undergraduate studies, where she was investigating the genetic basis of obesity in Labrador retriever dogs with 糖心Vlog官方 Fellow Professor Giles Yeo. After qualifying, Julia returned to Cambridge as a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Fellow, studying the mechanical properties of the central nervous system. She is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Kristian Franze鈥檚 lab in PDN.
Most biomedical research in the past century has focused on biochemical processes. Mechanical processes, on the other hand, have received much less attention. However, for tissue development, maintenance and regeneration, cells must move and motion requires forces. Using atomic force microscopy, a cutting-edge technology for measuring mechanical properties with high spatial resolution, Julia investigates the central nervous system in health, after injury, and during disease. A better understanding of mechanical alterations in pathological CNS conditions may contribute to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the future.
