Overview

The triumph of the German extreme right-wing party AfD in Sachsen-Anhalt鈥檚 elections in September came as little surprise, in a Europe-wide context in which far-right parties and movements are decidedly on the rise. Among the several traits that connect these hyper nationalistic movements to one another, besides virulent racism, islamophobia and anti-migrant rhetoric, is their understanding of national history and more specifically how the history curriculum should be substantially reshaped to convey an uncritical and nationalistic interpretation of the country鈥檚 history to pupils. German students should forget about Nazism, Italian pupils should learn about the glories of the Risorgimento and British ones about those of the Empire. The momentum that global history writing had gained over the past few years now seems to be fading away. Yet it is precisely the ability to research and show the long-term global and transnational roots of European history that could help historians to counter these ahistorical and revisionist narratives effectively.
