Overview
Falls are a common (30-40% of >65year olds fall each year) and important age-related health problem. 10% of falls result in major injuries or fractures. The total annual cost of fragility fractures to the UK has been estimated at 拢4.4 billion, which includes 拢1.1 billion for social care and 拢2 billion for hip fractures. Falls also have serious psychological (concerns-about-falling previously called fear-of-falling) and social consequences (admission to long term care).
But falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. There is strong evidence that falls can be prevented clinically. Some of the best evidence supports doing strength and balance exercises. Such exercise can be done at home, or in groups, or integrated into everyday routines. There is also evolving evidence for digital provision and the use of exergames to prevent falls. But not all apps live up to their promises.
This talk will provide an overview of more than 20 years research conducted by Chris Todd and his group on preventing falls, and will provide practical tips for the audience.

Lunchtime Seminar Series
The Lunchtime Seminar Series provide an opportunity for students, Fellows and Senior Members to share their expertise in a friendly and supportive environment over lunch.
The seminars are held in the Combination Room from 13.00 for an hour on most Wednesdays during full term. The audience is encouraged to bring their lunch in on a tray and take part in the discussion.
Most people who attend are non-specialists, so the talk has to be aimed at a general audience and speakers are warned to avoid technical jargon. We very much encourage students to offer a paper and use this as an opportunity to try out their thesis ideas on listeners who come from all different academic disciplines.
