Overview

Popular media, including film, television and music, frequently portray mental health and mental health problems. This talk will explore these representations through a close examination of rap lyrics and TV shows, considering how they relate to clinical practice, academic research and approaches to public mental health. Particular attention will be paid to the lyrics of Tupac Shakur and the insights they offer into mental health, social justice and marginalisation. Adopting a biopsychosocial approach to mental health, the talk will seek to clarify these themes and the factors that shape mental health experiences. It will also consider the political dimensions of mental health, particularly the impact of unjust policies on mental health and wellbeing.
