Dr Mohammed Chowdhury

Mr Mohammed Chowdhury is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a Bye-Fellow of 糖心Vlog官方, University of Cambridge. He is also a Research Fellow within the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute, where his work focuses on cardiovascular disease, advanced imaging technologies, and translational medicine.

He graduated with Honours in Medicine from the University of Manchester, where he also completed a distinction-awarded Master of Research in Cardiovascular Sciences. He subsequently obtained a Master of Science in Surgical Sciences before undertaking academic surgical training at the University of Cambridge. He completed a PhD in Surgery at Cambridge, supported by fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the British Heart Foundation, investigating molecular imaging approaches in peripheral arterial disease. During his doctoral training, he held research fellowships at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), developing novel imaging and intravascular therapeutic technologies.

Following completion of higher surgical training, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Vascular Surgery (FRCS Vasc) and appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and British Heart Foundation Clinical Career Development Fellow. His research has attracted national and international funding, generated patented technologies, and resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading cardiovascular and surgical journals.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and he is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, clinical supervision, and academic mentorship.

Mr Chowdhury鈥檚 research focuses on understanding, imaging, and treating cardiovascular disease, with particular interests in atherosclerosis, peripheral arterial disease, and vascular inflammation. His work sits at the intersection of surgery, cardiovascular medicine, biomedical engineering, and imaging science, with the overarching aim of improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with vascular disease.

A major theme of his research has been the development and application of advanced molecular imaging technologies, including positron emission tomography (PET) and emerging optoacoustic imaging techniques. Through collaborations across Cambridge, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he has investigated how these technologies can identify high-risk vascular disease, predict disease progression, and guide personalised therapeutic interventions. He has also contributed to the development of novel intravascular drug-delivery platforms and imaging-guided therapeutic technologies, resulting in patented innovations.

Current projects explore the biological mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis and arterial remodelling, integrating advanced imaging with translational laboratory research and clinical studies.

Alongside his research activities, Mr Chowdhury is committed to medical education. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students across the University of Cambridge and supervises clinical and research trainees.
